Reading about Conflict and Resolution

So far the club has read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and Burn My Heart by Beverly Naidoo. Both books contain emotive themes of conflict and reconciliation, which resulted in engaging discussions at Book Club meetings. Activities at the meeting include character analysis and role-playing, reviewing the authors' intentions and scripting and acting out new chapters for the novel. As a group the students have enjoyed both books, particularly Burn My Heart, which is set in Kenya during the time of the Mau Mau uprising.

Our next book is Heaven Shop by Deborah Ellis, a novel set in Malawi about a young girl who overcomes the challenges and hardship of being orphaned when her parents die of AIDS.

We would like to thank supporters of the Book Club, who have generously donated books to the Club. Once the novel has been read and reviewed, all books are kept in the Kawangware Community Library for other members to read in the future. Should you be interested in donating a set of books (around 25) to the Book Club please contact Richard Lee, Literacy Coordinator at Braeburn.
