Reading Together |
"It was great! My kid was able to turn pages - something I had never thought about coz I felt he was too young, but I was wrong!" “I had good lessons with my kid, which makes me feel that he’s going somewhere.” These are the words of mothers of young children in Mathare Valley slum after they completed our 10-week family reading program, Little Hands, Big Steps. It’s a simple idea – convince moms that even the youngest kids can get something from books, provide them with books kids love, and show them how to use books as a way to spend very special time together. |
Most of our members don’t have a single book at home. Yet the connection between family reading and later literacy is powerful and proven.
It takes $50 U.S. to expand the program’s capacity by one family…that means access to a rotating selection of suitable books, training and support for parents and caregivers, surveys to measure the program’s effect, and certificates and take-home books for “graduates.” It costs $15 to refresh a Little Hands book bag for the next family and provide the training, certificates, and take-home books.
