This is the fourth and final week of our campaign to raise the profile – and some funds – for KidsLibs Trust in Kenya. On the eve of the American holiday of Thanksgiving, we’re simply going to say thank you. Last week, library staffers Charles and Stephen stood in an empty stretch of waste ground in the middle of the crowded Mathare Valley slum. Once this patch held hundreds of shacks housing thousands of poor Nairobians. That ended with the fires and violence of the disputed election in December 2007. Stephen and Charles were talking to a film crew from BookAid International about that time, and about the role their library is playing in rebuilding a sense of community in Mathare in the aftermath. |
KidsLibs is facing difficult times, as we try to expand in the face of a global downturn in charitable giving. But our network is stronger now. We’ve seen a solid increase in visitors to our website this month, and we’ve added new friends on Facebook.
