Maili Saba is Open! |
February 2010. Maili Saba is the fifth KidsLibs Trust centre to open in Kenya, and our third library created in partnership with the Mathare Youth Sports Association, or MYSA. It opened in September 2009, but it still needs a few finishing touches: catalogue drawers, shelf dividers, and even some shelving (plus kinderboxes), but we decided to go ahead anyway because the community was so anxious to start enjoying their new library. Maili Saba is run by MYSA volunteers Kennedy Macau and Simon, who where two of the three volunteers trained by KidsLibs in 2008 and 2009. (Douglas, the third volunteer is now training staff at the Githurai MYSA centre). Both Kennedy and Simon know the Maili Saba community very well, and are trying their best to make the center responsive to its members. The library here is VERY small, and it is hoped that MYSA will be able to extend the building at a future date. Sadly, Maili Saba and other centres created in partnership with MYSA are no longer part of the KLT family. |
