May 2009
In this month we have been busy with many activities taking place in the library. The book-reading and story telling is still going on well. The kids always have to register on their arrival to the library for data collection as well as evaluation. We have also come up with new simple and clear rules and regulations for club members as well as the users of the library.
This month we had school visits from nearby St. James school, which has an average of 80 student per class. They came in the afternoon for two hours and then went back to their school. We trained the students on how to handle the books and also how to choose a book from the shelves and return it to the right place. These students benefit from the books and also the combination of life skills education from some of our peer educators in the resource centre.

We have also been getting some comments from different members concerning school books. Some members have requested that school books be added to the library, this is a concern given the rules of the library which are not to have school course books in the library. We are educating the users on this rule and we are trying to make them understand it. The kids coming to the library enjoy all their moments there and they love spending time reading the magazines and newspapers.
We are hearing positive comments from parents towards the initiative, and they show their trust in the library attendants by bringing their children here. We keep parents involved and this has improved the behavior of the kids in the library.
Challenges:
- Damage of books by small kids in the library
- Lack of adequate space for reading when the library if full
- Lack of relevant reading materials like accounts, bibles, atlas, magazines, pink books, blue books, green books, as well as children and adults non fiction books. Too few books in library
- Demand for school books in the library by users especially students
- Lack of funds
- There was a reduction in number of users this month compared to last month
- Organise training to kids on book handling
- Prepare a proposal for the library's fundraising
- Create awareness on use of catalogue cards
- Market the library fully
- Request for new stock from KidsLibs Trust
