Update

Desmond writing a Pen Pal letter, Kawangware

June 2009

Lucy is settling in well! Her training is well under way... she has started cataloguing! She and Maurice are also updating the existing catalogue, and starting to organise school class visits to the library. Patrick is assisting them to start organising a drama and music group. We will hopefully be in receipt of further shelving, courtesy of DEC. This is MUCH needed after the donation of stock from Braeburn school. We are still hoping to receive a good desk top computer or two (plus UPS and a printer!) to enable us to start computerisation here.

Challenges:

  • Opening hours need changing on Sundays
  • Need books on religion, info technology, early childhood, accounting/ business, relationships and marriage, lifestyles.

Solutions:

  • An extra volunteer to be employed to cover lunches weekend rota etc.

Activities:

We have a poetry club, but need to change the age group.

Our Bookclub with Braeburn School is continuing well. We had a meeting beginning of June.

January 2009 has seen some major changes. Our original community partners, Work for Food (WFF), were unable to find sustainability for the centre after Safaricom funding finished in January, so Kawangware is now operated in partnership with Dagoretti Empowerment Centre, who also manage the building where the library is now housed. DEC have agreed to pay the rent, power and staff for an initial period of 4 years! WFF will still have a representative in the new library committee who will administer the library, and 3 of their staff will still run the library. KLT will continue to support this centre as always!

Bookclub: Kawangware was the first KidsLibs centre to start up a bookclub in partnership with a nearby international school. Our partner school is Braeburn, and the club has been meeting since April 2008. The group has already had its first meeting for 2009 with Braeburn primary school. Read more about the club!

Wheelchair donation! (February 2008) We have been donated a new wheelchair by Church of the Latterday Saints! We hope that wheelchair- bound users will come to the library in their own chairs, and move to the library chair whilst they use the library!
