September 2009

Achievements:

•     BookLab book group with International School of Kenya is set to resume, and new set of books has been received.
•     We managed to kill the insects that had invaded the library, thanks to donation of Ridsect Dudu spray from Sara Lee.
•     Drama group performed play on last year's post-election aggression, which we hope will diminish tension among our children.
•     Work is ongoing on drama performances giving information on children's rights.
•     Girl child club is preparing a play on early pregnancy and hopes to travel to the KidsLibs library in Sipili, Laikipia to perform.
•     Children are practicing their radio and TV presenter skills.
•    Hip Hop Club progressing well.
•     Educational programs on radio and TV are being presented.


Challenges:

•     Daily arguments with landlord and neighbors over access to happy room (bathroom).
•     We have run out of art materials.
•     Lack of stock in some areas is causing problems.
•     Computer classes have resumed but hampered by shortage of computers.
•     Power outages damaging computers.
•     Printer cartridge exhausted.
•     Need cleaning materials. Solutions
•     Installation of happy room padlock and water tank.
•     Need art materials and new stock.
•     Need 2 backup batter UPS units
•     Need new printer and cartridges
•     Need computers to be repaired.

Achievements:
•     Computer classes have resumed
•     Drama group made a play about post-election aggression, with the aim of diminishing tension between groups here.
•     Super Angels making a play about early pregnancy.
•     Radio and TV presentation; sessions on learning how to be a presenter are taking place in the library.
•     New hip hop club progressing
•     Radio and TV programmes (educational programmes) being shown in the library.
•     School class visits are running as scheduled.
Challenges:
•     Need more art materials
•     Need further stock
•     Don’t have enough working computers
•     Power outages.
•     Need new printer (plus ink etc)
•     Lack of control over water outside library door.
•     Insects (cockroaches)
•     Need cleaning materials

Mathare North girl group members

We had visitors from from Mukuru  area, and from the UK (Jane and Kate Ainslie). Some childrens' picture books have been withdrawn due damage from too much use. More religion books have been added in the children’s non fiction section.

Africa collection has been increased by 19 new books. Sara Lee has donated six boxes of sanitary towels for Super Angels group.
