Little Hands in Kawangware
|
Discovering the joy of books |
We launched Little Hands Big Steps at Kawangware Library on Saturday 15th May! We were hoping for ten families to take part...fifteen turned up. So our newest LHBS program already has a waiting list. Anne described to the group how the book bags should be used, and gave some tips on using books with very young children. Then Peggy, the newly-appointed chair of the LHBS project, went over the information in Swahili and Kikuyu, and added her own insights as a mom and "graduate" of the program. Patrick then spoke to the Mums about how important books and using books can be- and how much fun it can be! |
Peggy participated in the first group to go through the 10-week LHBS program, and we hope that the Kawangware moms/caregivers will find it easy to go to her with their questions about introducing their youngsters to the world of books.
Some care was taken over explaining that this is not to be seen as a school thing, to be forced on the children and making them read! The whole experience must be fun and enjoyable. The weekly report sheets were also explained in detail.
The Mums/ carers will come back on Saturday May 22nd, and we will see how they have managed! Peggy will be supervising this session.
