Aims and objectives

KidsLibs aims to work with Community Based Organisations to create Community Based Information Centres. KidsLibs will ensure the Centres will
  • Provide access to information for the communities living in the slums of Nairobi and other information deprived areas of Kenya
  • provide a safe location for children where they can read books, do their schoolwork, access information and feel at home.
  • Provide a space for informal learning. Where imaginations can grow, and new questions be thought of. This is a new concept for Kenya, where 'library' traditionally means "school".
  • Provide a space for community activities. Be a safe place to meet friends.
  • To give books that helps kids with work, and give answers to anything.
  • To make reading clubs where members can talk about books and writing.
  • Offer storytelling to the community, both traditional Kenyan storytelling and storytelling in English using books.
  • Provide an opportunity for children to write their own stories, dramas, poems, to draw pictures etc.
  • Provide a link with other organizations.
  • To keep the libraries free and open to all community members regardless of age, ethinic origin, or religion.
enable users of the libraries to understand how a library works, and to know that their libraries work in the same way as libraries all over the world. All the information books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal classification system. Fiction books are organized alphabetically.

We have volunteer librarians, as well as some paid members of MYSA staff. We hope to enable all of our staff to have at least some pay to cover their travel and lunch needs. It is generally up to the CBO to provide funding for staff.
